The Government of Canada is cracking down on tax evasion, and on April 11, 2016, the Government of Canada announced it will invest over $444 million to enhance the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) ability to detect, audit, and prosecute tax evasion – both at home and abroad.  Tax evaders may face criminal penalties including jail time, and significant fines. Foreigners who are in Canada on work visas may be deported from Canada.

The Criminal Investigations Program investigates instances of tax evasion and refers cases to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. The Canadian Revenue Agency has become more aggressive (and) publishes conviction statistics. Such statistics include the PPSC’s conviction rate of 96% during the 2012-2013 tax year.
